Annual Tribal Elections Today Conference

Course Description

Throughout the existence of tribes under the Indian Reorganization Act of 1934 and otherwise, tribal governments have conducted elections for tribal leaders and pursuant to issues under a referendum type of election. Some special elections are now being conducted due to vacancies, deaths, removal, recall and constitutional amendments of tribal constitutions.

This Seminar is designed to review and identify problem areas relating to the tribal election processes; so that tribal law may be improved through the protection of all tribal member’s procedural due process and the substantivel processes that will guard the integrity of all elections.

Without an understanding of the standard election processes, it is extremely difficult for any tribal election official to conduct and oversee, an effective approach to handle election problems and conflicts. Those conflicts may be dealt with in a professional manner that protects the political integrity of the tribe and the general welfare of the tribe.
